AMD Ryzen

That matters because Ryzen is built for clock speed, not core count. A Ryzen 9 9900X boosts to 5.6 GHz, where the Xeon Gold parts in our catalogue top out at 4.4 GHz. On anything that runs one thread at a time - a game tick, a video encode, a compiler pass - that gap is the whole story.

Ryzen pays off wherever one thread decides how fast the whole thing feels.
Minecraft, FiveM, Rust, CS2 and most MMO backends run their world simulation on a single thread. Tick rate follows clock speed, not core count, which is why a 4.8 GHz Ryzen holds a stable tick where a 2.4 GHz Xeon starts stuttering under the same player load. Anti-DDoS is included, so attacks on your game port are filtered upstream rather than by your server.
x264 and x265 scale across threads, but the per-frame work stays clock-bound. A 5950X at 4.9 GHz with 32 threads clears a transcode queue faster than a dual Xeon with more cores at half the frequency. Compilation is the classic mixed workload: the link step is single-threaded, the compile step is not. Ryzen wins both - high boost for the serial phases, 24 or 32 threads for the parallel ones. Self-hosted GitHub or GitLab runners on bare metal also skip the queue times and per-minute billing of shared CI. IPMI/KVM means you image the runner however you want.
Trading bots, VoIP bridges, WebRTC SFUs and matchmaking services are judged on p99 latency, not throughput. On bare metal there is no hypervisor scheduler between your process and the CPU, so jitter comes from your own code rather than from a noisy neighbour. Paris keeps round-trip times low across Western Europe.

Pick Ryzen when a single thread decides your performance: game ticks, encode times, build times, request latency. Pick Xeon when you need many slower cores at once - a hypervisor running thirty VMs, a database with 512 GB of ECC RAM, or a 10 Gbps port. If your bottleneck is frequency, no amount of extra Xeon cores will fix it.

For most game servers the Ryzen 9 5900X at €327.99/month is the sweet spot: a 4.8 GHz boost, 12 cores and 128 GB of RAM, which is enough to run several instances side by side. If you are hosting a single world and watching the budget, the 3900X at €168.99 handles it. Choose the 9900X only if you need DDR5 and 5.6 GHz for very high player counts or many worlds at once.
