CentOS VPS/VDS Hosting

CentOS 7 and 8 remain installable so you can bring an existing server back up as-is. Both releases are past their upstream end of support: for a new project, AlmaLinux and Rocky Linux are the direct successors.

The CentOS releases you can install

Two images are available, both aimed at existing workloads: a frozen application that has to be brought back into service unchanged, a test environment that must reproduce the original production system, or a migration you are preparing step by step.

  • CentOS 8.9
  • CentOS 7.9

CentOS 7 and CentOS 8 have both passed their upstream end of support: base packages no longer receive security fixes. We keep these images available for existing workloads and migrations, but an internet-facing server should not stay on them for long. AlmaLinux and Rocky Linux are the compatible successors.

CentOS

Where CentOS stands today

For about fifteen years CentOS Linux was the most common way to run a Red Hat compatible distribution for free, and a large share of the Linux administration documentation published over that period was written for it. Red Hat ended that model: CentOS Linux 8 stopped at the end of 2021, CentOS Linux 7 in June 2024, and the CentOS name now refers only to a development stream sitting upstream of RHEL, not to a stable release intended for production.

That is what gave rise to AlmaLinux and Rocky Linux, both of which do exactly what CentOS Linux used to do: a free, binary-compatible rebuild of RHEL. Migrating from CentOS 8 to the 8 branch of either one happens without changing package generation. From CentOS 7 the jump is wider and means a reinstall and a configuration rebuild, since version 7 has no direct equivalent in those distributions.

MTR
Packet loss and latency, hop by hop
Traceroute

When installing CentOS still makes sense

Every reason to install CentOS today is a transitional one - which does not make any of them less legitimate.

Bringing a frozen application back up

Business software that only runs on that package generation and where a rewrite is not on the table. Keep the server out of direct exposure, behind a firewall or a proxy.

Reproducing production as-is

A test or staging environment that has to behave exactly like the original server, for as long as it takes to validate a migration.

Preparing a staged migration

Stand the target machine up on CentOS, port the configuration across, then switch to AlmaLinux or Rocky Linux once you have identified the differences.

Restoring an old backup

Restore an image or archive produced on CentOS to extract data from it, without having to rebuild the original environment by hand.

The operating system is installed when you order and can be reinstalled from the client area at any time, at no cost and without changing plan. If you are undecided, nothing is locked in: the machine is the same, only the starting image changes.

Frequently asked questions

End of life, successors and how to migrate.

Base packages no longer receive upstream security fixes, so no - not for an internet-facing service left as-is. If you must keep CentOS, limit the server's exposure (strict firewall, no public service exposed directly) and treat the situation as temporary.
