All three active branches are available. AlmaLinux 10 is the newest, AlmaLinux 9 is the most widely deployed branch today, and AlmaLinux 8 remains the natural choice for migrating a CentOS 8 server without changing package generation.

Why run AlmaLinux on a VPS
AlmaLinux is a distribution binary compatible with Red Hat Enterprise Linux, built from the same sources and published free of charge by a non-profit foundation. Anything compiled for RHEL installs without adaptation: same package names, same dnf package manager, same configuration paths, same SELinux behaviour. That is what made it the most common replacement for CentOS Linux after the latter was discontinued.
The practical benefit is duration: each major branch is maintained for around ten years, against two to five for a consumer-oriented distribution. For a server you would rather not rebuild every couple of years - a line-of-business application base, a file server, an enterprise database - that is the most comfortable cycle available. The trade-off is that the software versions in the repositories are deliberately frozen, so reaching a recent PHP or Node.js means going through module streams or a vendor repository.

Migrating away from CentOS
This is the most frequent case by far. A CentOS 7 or 8 server transposes onto the matching AlmaLinux branch with minimal rewriting, and configuration files usually carry over unchanged.
RHEL-certified applications
Business software that only advertises Red Hat support installs and behaves the same way on AlmaLinux. Whether the vendor will support you there is a separate question to raise with them directly.
