The Debian releases you can install

Three stable releases are available at order time. Debian 13 “Trixie” is the current stable release, Debian 12 “Bookworm” remains the most common choice when you are adding to an existing fleet, and Debian 11 “Bullseye” is there for older applications that have not been ported yet.

  • Debian 13
  • Debian 12
  • Debian 11

The choice you make at checkout is not final: a reinstall from the client area lets you move between releases, or to a different distribution, whenever you need to.

Debian

Why run Debian on a VPS

Debian is a community distribution known for its conservative release policy: once a release is stable it only receives security and bug fixes, never a mid-cycle jump to a new major version of anything. In practice a server installed today behaves the same way two years from now, which makes it a comfortable base for everything you would rather not have to watch: a reverse proxy, a database, a mail server, a Docker host.

It is also the distribution Ubuntu is derived from, so documentation, packages and installation guides written for one usually apply to the other. If you follow a tutorial written for Ubuntu, the apt commands and the configuration file layout will be the same. The real difference is pace: Debian publishes a stable release roughly every two years, whereas Ubuntu ships an LTS every two years and an interim release every six months.

What our customers run on Debian

Debian shows up mostly in infrastructure roles, where stability matters more than having the newest packages.

Web hosting and reverse proxies

Nginx or Apache in front of a PHP, Node.js or Python application, with Certbot handling certificates. The packages Debian ships are enough in most cases, and vendor repositories cover the rest when you need something newer.

Docker host and containers

A minimal system that barely changes is exactly what you want underneath a container engine. Debian suits that role well: the base install is light, and everything that actually matters lives in the images.

Databases

PostgreSQL, MariaDB or Redis, standalone or behind an application hosted elsewhere. NVMe storage and full root access let you tune engine settings yourself instead of filing a support ticket.

Mail servers and internal services

Mailcow, Postfix or an internal directory. These are services you set up once and want to forget about - Debian's release cycle is designed for exactly that.

The operating system is installed when you order and can be reinstalled from the client area at any time, at no cost and without changing plan. If you are undecided, nothing is locked in: the machine is the same, only the starting image changes.

Frequently asked questions

Choosing a release, upgrading and reinstalling.

Debian 13 for a new project: it is the current stable release, so it will be supported the longest. Debian 12 if you are deploying alongside existing servers and want a consistent fleet. Debian 11 only to bring back an application that does not yet run on anything newer.
