Software
Which one you need depends on one question: does the page you are collecting render its content on the server, or in the browser? The answer changes the machine you should order.
The most economical crawler per page
Scrapy fetches HTML and parses it without ever starting a browser, which makes it an order of magnitude lighter than the alternatives. Its asynchronous engine keeps hundreds of requests in flight from a single process, and built-in throttling keeps you from hammering the sites you collect from.
VPS Mini handles tens of thousands of pages a day; move up only when parsing, not fetching, becomes the bottleneck.
For pages that only exist after JavaScript runs
Playwright drives a real Chromium, Firefox or WebKit in headless mode, so it sees exactly what a visitor sees once the scripts have run. That fidelity is expensive: every browser instance is a real browser, with the memory footprint of one.
Budget roughly 1 GB of RAM per concurrent browser — VPS Plus, with 8 GB and 4 vCPU, runs a comfortable handful.
When one machine is no longer enough
Selenium Grid spreads browser sessions across several nodes and hands them out through one endpoint, which is how a collection job scales past a single server. Running the hub and the nodes on separate VPS instances also isolates a crash to one node.
Give the hub a small plan and the nodes the memory: VPS Max, at 16 GB, is the usual per-node size.
Scraping is unusual in that it stresses the network and the memory while barely touching the disk. These four points are where a job actually fails.
A million HTML pages is roughly 50 GB; the same million rendered in a headless browser, images and fonts included, is several times that. Allowances run from 15 TB on VPS Mini to 120 TB on VPS Ultimate, and they are stated per plan rather than hidden behind a fair-use clause.
A headless browser is a browser: count about a gigabyte of RAM per concurrent instance and size the plan from there. Scrapy without a browser is the opposite case and stays comfortable on the smallest plans.
Collection jobs are long by nature, and a laptop or an office connection is not. A VPS runs continuously, keeps a fixed IP address, and lets a scheduler restart a job at a set hour without anyone present.
Headless browsers need system libraries and font packages that no managed platform will let you install. KVM gives you a full system and root, so `apt install` behaves exactly as it does on your own machine.
Every scraping project starts on a laptop and leaves it for the same three reasons: the machine sleeps, the home IP address changes, and the job takes longer than the working day. A VPS solves all three at once — it stays up, it keeps one dedicated IPv4 address, and a cron entry or a systemd timer starts the run whether or not you are there.
It also separates the collection from the analysis. The server gathers and writes to a database or an object store; your workstation queries the result. That split is what keeps a dataset from living in a single folder on a single laptop, and it is why most teams end up running two plans — a small one for the crawler and a larger one for whatever consumes its output.
Network transparency
Ping, MTR and traceroute run live on our network, over IPv4 and IPv6. Measure the route from your own connection - before you pay.
Same machines, same locations, same control panel — only the software you install on top changes. If your project sits between two of these pages, any of the plans above will run it.
Sizing, traffic, IP addresses and what is allowed.
Start with VPS Mini if your crawler parses HTML directly, as Scrapy does — it will take you further than you expect. Move to VPS Plus or above as soon as you run headless browsers, because each concurrent instance costs roughly a gigabyte of memory.
