Two branches are available at order time. Rocky Linux 10 is the newest and covers fresh deployments; Rocky Linux 8 stays in place for fleets built in the CentOS 8 era, whose package generation it matches.
The choice you make at checkout is not final: a reinstall from the client area lets you move between releases, or to a different distribution, whenever you need to.

Rocky Linux was created in 2020, as a direct response to CentOS Linux being discontinued, and pursues the same goal: providing a free distribution binary compatible with Red Hat Enterprise Linux. The packages, the dnf package manager, the configuration layout and SELinux behaviour are all RHEL's, which means an operational procedure written for Red Hat can be reused without rewriting it.
As with the rest of this family, each major branch is maintained for around ten years. That cycle changes how you work: you do not plan a migration every two years, but one every five to ten. The downside is well known - the software versions in the base repositories are frozen for the life of the branch, so anything newer comes through module streams or a vendor repository.
Network transparency
Ping, MTR and traceroute run live on our network, over IPv4 and IPv6. Measure the route from your own connection - before you pay.
Rocky Linux fills the same roles as AlmaLinux, often out of continuity with an existing fleet.
Rocky Linux 8 matches the package generation of CentOS 8, which makes it the most direct transposition for a server built in that era.
When internal procedures, operations scripts or reference images are written for Red Hat, Rocky Linux runs them without adaptation.
The RHEL family tooling - volume management, advanced filesystems, daemonless containers - is available there in the versions Red Hat's documentation expects.
A base installed once and operated for years, where stable library versions matter more than recent ones.
The operating system is installed when you order and can be reinstalled from the client area at any time, at no cost and without changing plan. If you are undecided, nothing is locked in: the machine is the same, only the starting image changes.
RHEL compatibility, picking a branch and comparing with AlmaLinux.
Both pursue the same RHEL compatibility and feel very similar in daily use. The difference is governance: Rocky Linux is run by an organisation backed by a company, AlmaLinux by a foundation where members vote. Align with what your other servers already use; failing that, the choice has little practical consequence.
