The Kali Linux release you can install
Kali has no numbered branches to pick from: it is a rolling release, updated continuously from a single stream. The quarterly images (2025.1, 2025.2 and so on) are snapshots of that stream rather than separate versions, and a full upgrade brings an older install to the exact state of the newest image.

Why run Kali Linux on a VPS
Kali Linux is built from Debian testing and maintained by OffSec. What sets it apart is neither the kernel nor the init system but its package set: several hundred security tools, packaged and kept current by the project, grouped into themed metapackages. Everything else is Debian - apt for packages, the same configuration tree, the same services - so a procedure written for Debian applies without a rewrite.
The rolling model has a flip side: there is no frozen branch with a known end-of-life date, and updates land continuously. On a server that means updating regularly rather than in widely spaced batches. The install is also lighter than on a workstation: the graphical metapackage is not required, a headless base is enough, and a remote desktop can be added later if the work calls for it.
