Windows VPS: Xeon Gold or High Performance — how to choose

L'équipe InfrawireMay 15, 20263 min read

At Infrawire, two ranges run Windows Server: Windows VPS on Intel Xeon Gold, and High Performance VPS, which installs equally well with Linux or Windows. Both give you full administrator RDP access, NVMe storage and anti-DDoS included — but they target different workloads and different locations.

Windows Xeon Gold VPS: the right balance for most use cases

The Windows VPS range fits when you need a stable Windows desktop over RDP for:

  • business and office applications (Office, light ERPs, .NET tools);
  • SQL Server under moderate load, or several small databases;
  • "classic" Windows application servers;
  • test environments, staging, or SMBs on a controlled budget.

Intel Xeon Gold processors and DDR4 RAM deliver excellent reliability and predictable value for money. For an IIS brochure site, a small application server or daily RDP use without permanent CPU saturation, it is often the most rational choice. It is also the only one of the two ranges available in France.

High Performance VPS on Windows: when CPU becomes the bottleneck

The High Performance range targets Windows workloads that consume a lot of CPU over long periods:

  • intensive SQL Server (large queries, reporting, ETL);
  • compilation, data processing, heavy scheduled jobs;
  • several active RDP sessions with demanding software;
  • some trading scenarios (MetaTrader, EAs) or business computation;
  • applications that easily saturate a Xeon Gold VPS.

It runs on two platforms, depending on the location: AMD Ryzen 9 7900 (up to 5.4 GHz, Zen 4) or Intel Core i9-14900K (up to 6 GHz), always with DDR5 RAM and dedicated vCPUs. If you see Windows CPU pegged at 100% on Xeon Gold, this is the logical step before considering a dedicated server.

Locations: often the deciding factor

The Windows VPS range is deployed in nine countries: France, Germany, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Türkiye, India and Hong Kong.

The High Performance range covers five locations, split across the two platforms: AMD Ryzen 9 7900 in Germany, the United States and Singapore; Intel Core i9-14900K in the Netherlands, the United States and Canada. It is not offered in France — so if your constraint is hosting Windows Server in Paris, the choice is already made.

Linux and upgrades

Need Linux rather than Windows? The NVMe VPS (Xeon Gold) and High Performance VPS ranges follow the same CPU logic.

To host closer to your users, see the guide deploying a VPS by location.

You can scale CPU, RAM and storage within a range. Moving from one range to the other means ordering on the target range's page and migrating your data: the two catalogues are separate, with their own locations and their own hardware.

Conclusion

There is no "best" Windows VPS in absolute terms: Xeon Gold for most remote desktops and standard Windows applications — and the only option if you must stay in France; High Performance when the processor becomes the bottleneck. Start with the range that fits your budget, measure CPU usage in production, then move up if needed.
