Install MetaTrader 4 on a Windows VPS

MetaTrader 4 (MT4) is the most popular platform for Forex and Expert Advisors. This guide installs MT4 on your Infrawire Windows VPS via RDP.

📋 Prerequisites

• Windows VPS with RDP (RDP guide)
• Trading account with an MT4 broker
• At least 2 GB RAM (4 GB recommended for multiple EAs)

Download MetaTrader 4

Download the installer from your broker (Platforms / MT4) or MetaQuotes. Open Microsoft Edge on the VPS and run the .exe file.

Install MT4

Run the installer → Next → accept license → default path C:\Program Files\MetaTrader 4 → Finish. On first launch, pick your broker or add it manually.

Log in to your account

File → Login to trade account: enter account number, password and server from your broker. Check the connection indicator (green = OK).

Enable algorithmic trading (Expert Advisors)

For EAs: Tools → Options → Expert Advisors tab:

• Enable Allow algorithmic trading
• Enable Allow DLL imports (if your EA requires it)
• Adjust Disable algorithmic trading when account changes as needed

Optimize MT4 on VPS

• Disable sleep: Settings → System → Power → Sleep: Never
• Close unused apps to free RAM
• Use more RAM if running multiple heavy charts or EAs
• Back up the MQL4 folder (Experts, Indicators) regularly
